Fotomuseum Hilversum is the museum for contemporary photography in the heart of the media city. The museum showcases photojournalism, documentary photo stories, and projects that explore current visual culture. In a world where people are inundated with images daily, the museum offers space for reflection, context, and truly seeing.
In addition to exhibitions, the museum presents an active program of artist talks, guided tours, workshops, film screenings, and public discussions. Through this, Fotomuseum Hilversum provides depth, dialogue, and opportunities for connection between creators and audiences.
The museum collaborates with partners such as World Press Photo, Zilveren Camera, and media partner Het Perfecte Plaatje. Its programming focuses on both leading photographers and emerging talent, highlighting how images are created, circulated, and given meaning.
Fotomuseum Hilversum is housed in the former town hall and features five exhibition halls, a museum café, and a shop. Under the motto Look, Meet, Relate, the museum invites visitors to experience photography, connect with others, and share stories.
Fotomuseum Hilversum is housed in the former Hilversum Town Hall, a national monument dating from 1904, designed by municipal architect Willem Marinus De Groot. The building served as the town hall until 1968, after which it was repurposed for cultural use.
During this period, the Goois Museum opened, focusing primarily on local history and regional art. In 2005, the museum was expanded with a circular extension designed by architect Hans Ruyssenaars, and the entire building was renovated.
In 2013, the museum became independent. This led to a reorientation of both its programming and collection policy, with photography increasingly taking center stage. Over the past ten years, the museum has fully developed in this direction.
