Fotomuseum Hilversum offers educational programmes for various types of education, including primary, secondary, higher, and special education, as well as after-school initiatives.
As the main photography museum of Central Netherlands, we offer a unique place for young and old alike, where contemporary photo exhibitions move you with powerful images and stories that stay with you.
For every exhibition, we organise a range of guided tours. In addition, we create a scavenger hunt and a viewing guide that students to explore and analyse the exhibition in an interactive way.

Lower grades
Pupils explore the exhibition through search and viewing questions. They learn to recognise themes and techniques in photography and sometimes make connections to the world around them. The scavenger hunt is completed once the keyword has been found. The scavenger hunt is available for free at the front desk.
Upper grades
This guide helps students to independently make connections between the exhibition and social issues. The questions lead them through the exhibition’s themes, and at the end there is a hands-on assignment that students can complete in class or at home.
A. Standard guided tour (duration: 1 hour)
The tour begins with an introduction to the exhibition. The guide explains the concept of the exhibition, provides context on specific works, and shares stories about the creators. Optional: After the introduction, students can work in small groups with the scavenger hunt or viewing guide.
B. Visual Thinking Strategy tour (duration: 1 hour)
During this tour based on the Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS), the guide invites students to observe and interpret artworks without judgement. Using three fixed questions, students engage in dialogue and learn to listen to each other’s responses. This method stimulates critical thinking, associative skills, and the ability to make connections with the world around them.
C. Combination tour (duration: 1 hour)
This tour combines the best of both approaches: an introduction to the exhibition, followed by VTS questions that encourage students to look and interpret in a different way. Finally, they work independently with the scavenger hunt or viewing guide.
D. Tailor-made project (duration: depending on arrangements)
For schools working on specific projects, we offer a customised programme tailored to the needs of the school project.
