Fotomuseum Hilversum shows work by Paulo Chicareli following his sudden death

'Welcome to the House of the Forgotten Ones' (2025) by Paulo Chicareli (1993–2026) can be seen at Fotomuseum Hilversum from August 28 as part of the exhibition 'Layered Realities: Photography & Collage'.

On view in Layered Realities: Photography & Collage.

“Although Paulo is no longer here, something of him remains present in his images, in his work, and in the people who continue to see and feel what he wanted to say.”

— Marcia Chicareli, Paulo’s mother

Paulo was due to take part in the group exhibition but passed away suddenly in the lead-up to the opening. Together with his family and friends in Brazil, friends in the Netherlands, and the KABK, Fotomuseum Hilversum has realised his installation. Working from the notes, instructions, and documentation Paulo left behind.

In Welcome to the House of the Forgotten Ones, Paulo explores queer affection as a political act. Through found photography, flyers, and posters, he imagines a public space where queer love and intimacy can exist freely and visibly, and small gestures of love become forms of resistance.

Our thoughts go out to Paulo’s family, friends, and everyone who loved him and worked with him. We are very grateful to them for the trust and care with which they helped to make his work visible after all.

The work is on display at Fotomuseum Hilversum from August 28 to October 18.
